Soon after arriving in the U.S., Dr. Zhang developed an impacted wisdom tooth. What she remembers most about this experience is the patience that her dentist demonstrated – they walked her through every detail of the case, reviewing the steps of the planned treatment and addressing any questions she had. She appreciated this transparent style of practicing, which left a deep impression on her and sparked her interest in becoming a dentist.

Where Did You Study Dentistry?

Dr. Zhang completed her undergraduate studies at UT San Antonio and Eastern Michigan University, graduating with an honors degree in Biochemistry before being accepted into the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, which is the top-ranked dental school in the whole country! Dr. Zhang completed her clinical requirements for the program by the end of her third year, one whole year earlier than her classmates.

She was also selected to attend the Global Initiative Program, which is a collaborative program designed to promote dental school in developing countries. During this time, she helped host lectures and pre-clinical workshops, as well as providing oral health screenings in local communities and remote rural villages.

Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?

Texas is quite different than Harbin, China, which is where Dr. Zhang grew up – but it’s safe to say that she loves it here! She’s married to her best friend, a native Texan, and they happily reside in DFW with their two children. In her free time, Dr. Zhang enjoys watching movies, checking out local parks and cultural events, and traveling – so don’t be surprised if she asks you about the places you’ve visited over the years!
