Who Is a Good Candidate for Dentures?

Dentures are more customizable than many people realize, and they can restore anywhere from just a few missing teeth to entire arches of lost pearly whites. During your initial consultation, Dr. Zhang will examine your mouth and speak with you about your dental history, as well as your smile goals, before reviewing all of your options. Normally, it’s recommended to have teeth replaced in a timely manner in order to avoid additional oral health issues down the road.

Types of Dentures

Based on your unique tooth loss situation, Dr. Zhang may suggest any one of the following types of dentures to help restore the function and appearance of your smile. She’ll also be sure that you understand the pros and cons of your options, what you can expect to pay, and how you can make the most of your future restoration. With that in mind, there are normally a few different types of dentures used to restore missing teeth:

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures consist of a gum-colored base, usually made from a combination of acrylic and metal, that’s designed to fit around your existing teeth so that it can steadily hold the replacement ones in place. Partial dentures can fill gaps left by a few missing teeth along the same arch. They’re also conveniently removable, making them easy to clean and maintain.

Full Dentures

Traditional full dentures are designed to restore an entire arch of lost teeth (or both arches) by sitting atop the gums and remaining stable with the help of suction, precise muscle control, and sometimes adhesives. They feature lifelike replacement teeth made from porcelain or ceramic that rest on a gum-colored acrylic base. They don’t just look totally natural, though—they also function just like your original teeth.

Implant Dentures

Implant dentures take the lifelike, aesthetic benefits of traditional dentures and combine them with the ingenuity of dental implants. Using small titanium posts that are surgically embedded into a patient’s jaw, the roots of the missing teeth can be replaced. From there, custom-made denture restorations can be attached on top that receive strong, unwavering support. These come with all kinds of added benefits, but most notably, they can prevent the bone loss that occurs following tooth loss.
