What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants refer to small rods made from biocompatible materials like titanium that are surgically placed into a patient’s jawbone. These posts are capable of fusing with the surrounding bone tissue, meaning that they can replace the missing roots of lost teeth – which is something that traditional options like dentures or bridges cannot do. Once this fusion has occurred, a custom-made dental restoration can be attached on top to replace the visible portions of the teeth. However, these restorations aren’t just for sure; thanks to the support from the implant posts, these new teeth are durable, functional, and can serve a patient well for life under the right circumstances.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

  • Initial Dental Implant Consultation – The first step of your dental implant journey is meeting with Dr. Zhang for a consultation. During this appointment, she’ll confirm that your jaw can support dental implants and ensure that your mouth is in good health. Some patients may need to undergo treatments such as periodontal therapy or a bone graft before their mouth can safely accommodate implants.
  • Dental Implant Surgery – Dr. Zhang can complete the entire dental implant process here in our office, meaning you won’t have to coordinate with other teams or offices. As for the surgery itself, it’s a very straightforward process. Anywhere from one to a few implants can be used, and after the jaw tissue is accessed through the gums, the posts are placed at precise angles directly into the bone.
  • Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – Following the surgery, your mouth will need several months to heal. Osseointegration, or the process in which the posts fuse with your bone tissue, is arguably the most important part of your dental implant journey. You’ll be given guidelines on how to accommodate this process. Afterward, you’ll return to receive your abutments, which go on top of the implant posts and help to secure your restoration(s).
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – Dental implants can be used to replace any number of missing teeth, regardless of where they are located in the mouth. After you’ve received your abutments and we’ve confirmed that your implants have successfully fused with your jaw, you will receive your custom-made restoration, which is attached to your abutments and is supported by the implant posts.
