Wisdom teeth often grow sideways because there isn’t enough room in the jaw for them to erupt properly. By the time these molars begin to emerge, your other permanent teeth are usually already in place, leaving limited space at the back of your mouth.
When a wisdom tooth encounters an obstruction or doesn’t have enough room to move into position, it may become trapped beneath the gum tissue or jawbone. It can grow toward the neighboring molar, away from it, or even parallel to the jawline.
You may not notice anything unusual because an impacted wisdom tooth can remain hidden beneath your gums. Dental X-rays help your dentist determine its position and whether it could cause problems.
